SUMMARY:Mitch Benn: The Lehrer Effect | The Alex
DESCRIPTION:Important Notice: Fire at the Alexander Centre\nThis event is still going ahead. Following a fire in our main hall on New Year’s Eve\, this space is currently unavailable and the event has therefore been relocated to our Bar area. \nWe apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding. \nTo read more about the fire and its effects\, please click HERE \n\nMitch Benn: The Lehrer Effect \nWhen\, years ago\, a teenage Mitch discovered American comic songwriting legend Tom Lehrer\, the course of his life was changed forever. Mitch looks at the legacy of the elusive Lehrer\, the creative debt he\, and all those who mix humour and melody\, owe to him and performs some of the more Lehreresque of his own songs. Since Mr. Lehrer placed his entire catalogue in public domain\, expect a few Mitch Benn-ified covers of some of Tom’s most famous creations as well.\n\nTom Lehrer died at the age of 97\, immediately before the premiere of the show in Edinburgh\, which means that the show became a heart-felt eulogy rather than a living tribute to the artist.

SUMMARY:Daliso Chaponda: Topical Storm – The Faversham Assembly Rooms
DESCRIPTION:Important Notice: Fire at the Alexander Centre\nThis event was originally scheduled to take place at the Alexander Centre\, Faversham. (In fact he’s seen the news from both sides\, having been in the tabloids himself.) But recently the news has been so absurd\, chaotic and overwhelming that it more or less mocks itself. Where do we go from here? \nTopical Storm is Daliso’s response. A show not about THE news but about news itself. Journalists\, bloggers\, fake news\, satirical news: have we lost the thread of it all? Is the reporting of news endlessly polarising us as a society rather than educating us? Would we be better off going right back to the first ever news bulletin – the original caveman drawing on a wall – and starting from scratch? Daliso does just that in this explosive new standup show. \n★★★★ ‘Full of sharp one-liners and well crafted gags…a real talent’ Metro\n‘Gets laughs out of topics other comedians shun’ The Guardian\n‘Brilliantly bold\, thoroughly engaging and provocative’ Wee Review

SUMMARY:Susan Harrison: Should I Still Be Doing This?
DESCRIPTION:Following a smash hit Edinburgh Fringe run\, award-winning character comedian Susan Harrison brings her latest collection of joyfully bizarre alter-egos to her home town of Faversham. Come to this special preview date before she heads to Soho Theatre! Is it ok to still be dressing up as weird characters as you get older? Susan might not be sure\, but a life size Sindy doll\, a panda from Chester Zoo in the 90’s and a woman who’s swallowed a small girl in a well will have plenty to say about it. Some others might turn up too. \n“A gloriously absurd\, laugh-out-loud show… as inventive as it is deliriously funny **** The List.\n‘Original\, joyful… unadulterated fun’ **** Broadway Baby\n‘Unique and hilarious’ **** Midlothian View\n‘A brilliant showcase of modern character comedy… I could’ve watched her for hours’ **** Lisa In The Theatre\n“First class coming acting” (The Guardian)\n\nAs seen/heard in: Showstopper! SUMMARY:The Fureys | The Abbey School
DESCRIPTION:Important Notice: Fire at the Alexander Centre\nOn New Year’s Eve\, a fire occurred at the rear of our Gatefield Hall\, The Alex’s main events space. Thankfully\, no one was in the venue and there were no injuries. This event has been relocated from St Mary’s Church to The Abbey School\, London Rd\, Faversham ME13 8RZ due to unforeseen circumstances. \nWe will be\, or may already have been\, in touch with all current ticket holders directly. If you have any questions\, please get in contact via email at bookings@thealex.org.uk or by phone on 01795 591691. \nTo read more about the fire and its effects please click HERE \n\nAfter several previous concerts in the Kent area\, THE FUREYS will play their last ever Kent concert here in  Faversham\, as part of their FAREWELL TOUR on Saturday 25th April 2026. \nLegends of Irish music & song\, The FUREYS renowned for their hit songs ‘I will love you’\, ‘When you were sweet 16’\, ‘The Green fields of France’\, ‘The old man’\, ‘Red rose café’\, ‘From Clare to here’\, ‘Her father didn’t like me anyway’\, ‘Leaving Nancy’\, ‘Steal away’ etc take to our stage for the final time as part of their FAREWELL TOUR. \nThe oldest of the brothers\, Eddie Furey left home in 1966 and travelled to Scotland at the time of the great folk revival where he met and shared accommodation with then unknown folk singers Billy Connolly and Gerry Rafferty. \nIn 1972\, Gerry Rafferty wrote ‘Her father didn’t like me anyway’ for Eddie. BBC Radio 1 presenter\, the late John Peel made it his single of the year. \nThey are particularly proud of their UK chart success with songs such as I Will Love You and When You Were Sweet Sixteen\, which in turn helped bring Irish folk and traditional music to a completely new audience. The band made their Top of the Pops debut in 1981. \nEddie Furey recalls how “many musicians have told us we influenced them after hearing a record from their parents or grandparents’ collection”. Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics has credited Eddie with teaching him his first chords on the guitar while still a teenager. Eddie would return the compliment by joining Dave on stage in Paris for a jam during Dave’s wedding to Bananarama’s Siobhan Fahey. \nTheir emotive songs stir many emotions\, tears and laughter\, sadness and joy.
