SUMMARY:The School that Escaped the Nazis
DESCRIPTION:The School that Escaped the Nazis\nAn Evening with Deborah Cadbury \nJoin acclaimed historian and author Deborah Cadbury for a compelling talk based on her celebrated book\, The School that Escaped the Nazis. \nIn 1933\, as Hitler rose to power\, German schoolteacher Anna Essinger recognised the growing danger facing her Jewish pupils and undertook an extraordinary act of courage: secretly relocating her entire school from Germany to safety in Kent. There\, at Bunce Court School\, she created a sanctuary for refugee children fleeing Nazi persecution and war. \nDrawing on first-hand testimony\, letters\, diaries\, and extensive original research\, Deborah Cadbury brings this remarkable true story vividly to life — a moving account of compassion\, resilience\, and humanity in one of history’s darkest periods. \nThe evening includes:\nA 45-minute talk by Deborah Cadbury\nA 15-minute audience Q&A \nPraise for The School that Escaped the Nazis\n“By turns heartbreaking and inspiring\, I could not stop reading this remarkable book.” — Josh Ireland\n“A celebration of what the human spirit can achieve.” — Julia Neuberger\n“Emotionally compelling.” — The Observer\n“A devastatingly affecting book.” — The Times\n“Impressively researched and vividly told\, this is a captivating portrait of courage and resilience in the face of unspeakable horror.” — Publishers Weekly \nAn unforgettable evening exploring an extraordinary story of courage\, education\, and hope in the face of tyranny.

SUMMARY:John Kearns: Tilting at Windmills | Faversham Assembly Rooms
DESCRIPTION:Important Notice: Fire at the Alexander Centre\nDue to the fire at The Alex on New Year’s Eve\, this event will take place at The Faversham Assembly Rooms\, Preston Street\, Faversham\, Kent\, ME13 8PG. \nFor venue-related enquiries (including access\, accessibility\, and parking)\, please contact the Alexander Centre team. \nFor a location map for The Faversham Assembly Rooms\, please click HERE \nWe apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding. \nTo read more about the fire and its effects\, please click HERE \n\nTilting at Windmills is the brand-new stand-up show from Taskmaster alumni and double Edinburgh Comedy Award Winner\, John Kearns. \nA fragmented\, digressing portrayal of a 38-year-old man’s life\, alluding to books he hasn’t read\, touching on the modern condition. Plus VAT! More allusive and bleak as ever\, it is unreal the comedian you become. And for who? Decent craic with the right crowd. A show for those who have read about but not committed to the Guinness Nitrosurge. \nSeen bewildered on Taskmaster (Channel 4)\, terrified on Live at the Apollo (BBC)\, getting through Never Mind the Buzzcocks (Sky)\, and implicating others on his Sky stand-up special The Varnishing Days.  More comfortable on pods but comes alive on stage\, for your pleasure! \nDirected by Olivier winner\, Jon Brittain. \n★★★★★ \nThe Guardian \n“most will surely be won over…with the delightful\, poetic flourish that defines all his work… perfectly structured with overlapping themes and surprising callbacks… It’s all rather wonderful” \nChortle ★★★★★ \n“about as funny as anything this decade” \nThe Times ★★★★

SUMMARY:Jekyll & Hyde | Faversham Assembly Rooms
DESCRIPTION:This event will take place at Faversham Assembly Rooms. \n\nUtterson the lawyer has a strange case on his hands. One involving blackmail\, murder – and his close friend Doctor Henry Jekyll. On the surface\, it seems like Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde couldn’t be more different people\, but there is a dark secret that ties them both together. \nThrough a series of interviews\, overheard conversations and outright confession\, Utterson slowly uncovers the grisly facts that link the\ncelebrated doctor to the monstrous Mr Hyde. But in this unbelievable story\, what can possibly be the truth? \nAward-winning performers Amelia Ace Armande and Joshua Crisp reanimate this classic Gothic horror. Morphing seamlessly between the cast of characters\, the pair conjure up murder on the misty streets of Victorian London in a delicious blend of original text\, sinuous physicality and dark humour.

SUMMARY:The Phantom Raspberry Blower of Old London Town | The Assembly Rooms
DESCRIPTION:Important Notice: Fire at the Alexander Centre\nDue to the fire at The Alex on New Year’s Eve\, this event will take place at The Faversham Assembly Rooms\, Preston Street\, Faversham\, Kent\, ME13 8PG. \nFor a location map for The Faversham Assembly Rooms\, please click HERE \nWe apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding. \nTo read more about the fire and its effects\, please click HERE \n\nWritten by Spike Milligan and Ronnie Barker\nAdapted by John Hewer \nSomething is rotten in Old London Town… \nIn Victorian England\, a rotten\, raspberry blower is claiming the lives of the upper-classes. The dark alleyways and moonlit graveyards of London are alive with the repetitive dins of the Phantom. \nInspector Corner of the Yard and his faithful sidekick\, Sergeant Bowles\, are fed up with these din-dins. The case is afoot. Will the Phantom be uncloaked? All will be revealed… particularly if the Phantom uncloaks himself. \nImmortalised by The Two Ronnies\, this Jack the Ripper parody is raspberry-jam-packed with Spike Milligan’s and Ronnie Barker’s love of surreal absurdism\, clever puns\, near-the-knuckle ribaldry\, quick-fire jokes and famous wordplay. \nCelebrating the 50th anniversary since its original broadcast in 1976\, this newly adapted stage play brings the Phantom back to life like never before. \nPresented by Hambledon Productions with the kind permission of Spike Milligan Productions Ltd and Handles for Forks Ltd.

SUMMARY:The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists | Faversham Assembly Rooms
DESCRIPTION:Due to ongoing refurbishment of The Alex’s main hall\, this show will take place in Faversham Assembly Rooms\, on Preston Street. \nThe Ragged Trousered Philanthropists\nadapted by Neil Gore from the book by Robert Tressell\,\ndirected by Louise Townsend \nNeil Gore presents a one-person version of the classic novel by Robert Tressell featuring projection\, political conjuring tricks\, live music and song. Meet the famous characters and enjoy the scenes\, speeches and songs\, featuring the Great Money Trick as its centrepiece. \nThis enduring and absorbing classic story of a year in the life of a group of Edwardian painters and decorators is brought to life by Neil Gore using his extensive knowledge of the book and the play\, having performed it in many versions over forty years. \n‘The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists’ follows a group of workers as they renovate ‘The Cave’\, a three-storey town house\, for Mayor Sweater. It traces their hardships and struggles for survival in a complacent and stagnating Edwardian England. These workers are the ‘philanthropists’ who throw themselves into back-breaking work for poverty wages in order to generate profit for their masters. They are joined by artist Owen\, whose spirited attacks on the dishonesty of Capitalism along with his Socialist vision\, highlights the exploitation in their workplace but also focuses on the inequality in society as a whole. \n\n“Tremendous” The Times\n“A one person Tour-De-Force” Clare Brennan (The Observer) \n“10/10 Sensational” Liverpool Echo\n“A strong and robust show that brings the characters\, humour and inspirational ideas of this great book to life. It is needed now more than ever. You’ll leave the theatre and join the struggle!” Ken Loach\, Film Director \n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GM9lWrzw7I
