SUMMARY:The Fureys | The Abbey School
DESCRIPTION:Important Notice: Fire at the Alexander Centre\nOn New Year’s Eve\, a fire occurred at the rear of our Gatefield Hall\, The Alex’s main events space. Thankfully\, no one was in the venue and there were no injuries. This event has been relocated from St Mary’s Church to The Abbey School\, London Rd\, Faversham ME13 8RZ due to unforeseen circumstances. \nWe will be\, or may already have been\, in touch with all current ticket holders directly. If you have any questions\, please get in contact via email at bookings@thealex.org.uk or by phone on 01795 591691. \nTo read more about the fire and its effects please click HERE \n\nAfter several previous concerts in the Kent area\, THE FUREYS will play their last ever Kent concert here in  Faversham\, as part of their FAREWELL TOUR on Saturday 25th April 2026. \nLegends of Irish music & song\, The FUREYS renowned for their hit songs ‘I will love you’\, ‘When you were sweet 16’\, ‘The Green fields of France’\, ‘The old man’\, ‘Red rose café’\, ‘From Clare to here’\, ‘Her father didn’t like me anyway’\, ‘Leaving Nancy’\, ‘Steal away’ etc take to our stage for the final time as part of their FAREWELL TOUR. \nThe oldest of the brothers\, Eddie Furey left home in 1966 and travelled to Scotland at the time of the great folk revival where he met and shared accommodation with then unknown folk singers Billy Connolly and Gerry Rafferty. \nIn 1972\, Gerry Rafferty wrote ‘Her father didn’t like me anyway’ for Eddie. BBC Radio 1 presenter\, the late John Peel made it his single of the year. \nThey are particularly proud of their UK chart success with songs such as I Will Love You and When You Were Sweet Sixteen\, which in turn helped bring Irish folk and traditional music to a completely new audience. The band made their Top of the Pops debut in 1981. \nEddie Furey recalls how “many musicians have told us we influenced them after hearing a record from their parents or grandparents’ collection”. Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics has credited Eddie with teaching him his first chords on the guitar while still a teenager. Eddie would return the compliment by joining Dave on stage in Paris for a jam during Dave’s wedding to Bananarama’s Siobhan Fahey. \nTheir emotive songs stir many emotions\, tears and laughter\, sadness and joy.

SUMMARY:Mitch Benn: The Lehrer Effect | The Alex
DESCRIPTION:Important Notice: Fire at the Alexander Centre\nThis event is still going ahead. Following a fire in our main hall on New Year’s Eve\, this space is currently unavailable and the event has therefore been relocated to our Bar area. \nWe apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding. \nTo read more about the fire and its effects\, please click HERE \n\nMitch Benn: The Lehrer Effect \nWhen\, years ago\, a teenage Mitch discovered American comic songwriting legend Tom Lehrer\, the course of his life was changed forever. Mitch looks at the legacy of the elusive Lehrer\, the creative debt he\, and all those who mix humour and melody\, owe to him and performs some of the more Lehreresque of his own songs. Since Mr. Lehrer placed his entire catalogue in public domain\, expect a few Mitch Benn-ified covers of some of Tom’s most famous creations as well.\n\nTom Lehrer died at the age of 97\, immediately before the premiere of the show in Edinburgh\, which means that the show became a heart-felt eulogy rather than a living tribute to the artist.

SUMMARY:Celebrating 100 years of Laurel & Hardy Presented by Neil Brand
DESCRIPTION:Important Notice: Fire at the Alexander Centre \nOn New Year’s Eve\, a fire occurred at the rear of our Gatefield Hall\, The Alex’s main events space. Thankfully\, no one was in the venue and there were no injuries. Unfortunately\, this event has been cancelled. \nWe will be\, or may already have been\, in touch with all current ticket holders directly. If you have any questions\, please get in contact via email at bookings@thealex.org.uk or by phone on 01795 591691. \nTo read more about the fire and its effects please click HERE \n\nFollowing the success of his 2023/24 tour\, Neil Brand invites you to celebrate the centenary of Laurel and Hardy with a brand-new show. In 1926\, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy signed separate contracts with Hollywood film mogul Hal Roach\, and appeared for the first time in a film together\, “45 Minutes from Hollywood”. The following year they would become an official comedy partnership that would set the whole world rocking with laughter. Nobody could have anticipated at the time how this unlikely Anglo/American comedy duo would become global icons in over 130 countries around the world \nWe are pleased to announce and celebrate those 100 years with the brand new production of Neil Brand’s “Evening with Laurel & Hardy” 2026 Centenary Tour. Neil has established himself as the foremost exponent of silent film and improvised piano accompaniment. \nThanks to new restorations of their silent films\, and the rediscovery of some of their lesser-known comedies\, Neil will uncover gems of hilarity from the team whose comedy never ages\, and bring them to jaw-dropping life with the demanding live piano improvisations for which he is so famous. Featuring extended scenes from the best of their silent comedies\, particularly You’re Darn Tootin\, The Finishing Touch and The Second Hundred Years. \nNeil’s concerts have proved really popular with his personal contact with the audience & his unique insight into Laurel & Hardy and the birth of the cinema industry. His engaging easy-going style\, along with his Q&A at the end of the show answering all the questions from the audience\, followed by his after-show ‘Meet and Greet’\, makes for a highly entertaining evening. \nCurrently working on a television documentary and a new book about ‘The Boys’\, Neil is once again looking forward to sharing his knowledge and expertise with audiences around the country\, and celebrating the life and times of comedy legends\, Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy.

SUMMARY:Jacqui Dankworth: The Sondheim Songbook
DESCRIPTION:Important Notice: Fire at the Alexander Centre \nOn New Year’s Eve\, a fire occurred at the rear of our Gatefield Hall\, The Alex’s main events space. Thankfully\, no one was in the venue and there were no injuries. Unfortunately\, this event has been cancelled. \nWe will be\, or may already have been\, in touch with all current ticket holders directly.
