The Great Faversham Explosion, 1916
At 1.20pm on April 2, 1916, in the midst of the terrible carnage of the First World War, a massive explosion ripped through the Explosives Works on the Uplees Marshes at Faversham.
This devastating event was not caused by enemy action or sabotage. Instead, an immense store of 200 tons of TNT was accidentally detonated when empty sacks caught fire. A series of smaller explosions followed, adding to an already immense death toll of over 100 men and boys.
Dr Martin Watts BA (Hons) PhD (Open) FRHistS SFHEA will guide the audience through the causes and consequences of this tragedy — the most terrible disaster in the history of the explosives industry.
